Mary Ware Scholarship Fund

The Mary Ware Scholarships are awarded annually to college students who are committed to making a positive change in their life despite their unstable childhood homes. Candidates must be residents of Georgia and live in unstable homes where they don’t have the financial resources for mentoring and academic support. Although many of these students have great academic potential, they don’t have the financial and emotional support to get them through the grade levels necessary to receive the Hope Scholarship. The Mary Ware Scholarships are made payable to the college or university that the recipient will be attending to cover the recipient’s tuition or other applicable expenses. Each year, the Mary Ware Scholarship committee will award as many individual students as possible that come from the prior year’s Mary Ware Endowment’s investment earnings.

Congratulations to Tiesha Holmes!

I am officially an alumna of Georgia Southern University! I am eternally grateful to everyone at the Mary Ware Scholarship program and how patient they've been with me. They gave me time to heal, grow and stay focused. I've started and quit a lot of things in life, but graduating from college is the one goal I've been committed to keeping. The scholarship fund has played a vital part in my success and I am forever grateful. Thank you for being such a vital force in me reaching this milestone. I could not have accomplished this without your support. My family and I are eternally grateful!” - Tiesha Holmes

Tiesha’s Story

Before her high school graduation in 2013, Tiesha learned that one of her older brothers had cancer. Her parents were stressed trying to figure out how they would handle everything. She was worried and concerned for her brother,  but also thinking of the impact this would financially have on her college journey.  “I prayed to God for a way to afford school and care for my brother” she explains. That very next morning, she was awarded the 2013 Mary Ware Scholarship.

“My brother passed in 2015 and my grades took a nosedive. I could no longer receive financial aid and had to take two years off to work full-time and save up money. I was then able to pay for the 2018 school year, but by 2019, funds were low again. Still denied financial aid, I reached back to the Mary Ware Scholarship. To my surprise, they were still willing to work with me and bless me with the financial assistance needed to complete my Bachelor of Business Administration degree - December 2020.

Tiesha’s career focus is in healthcare human resources, and one day become a Licensed Christian Counselor. She explains, “Seeing others healed, set free, or getting proper treatment for their traumas and mental health conditions is crucial in a time such as this."

Meet Mary Ware.

Mary had the biggest heart for helping children who were less fortunate and/or affected by trauma. She used her creative talents to support numerous charitable and service organizations; one that was dearest to her heart was the Foster Care Support Foundation of Georgia. It was this empathetic love to nurture children into successful adults that ignited the Mary Ware Scholarship in her memory.

Mary passed at the age of 64 years on April 16, 2010.
