Meet Harry Lamar Hall
“One of his greatest gifts was teaching the kids the importance of an education. He helped put all of his grandchildren through college…a true blessing. I am happy to report that all of them have put their degrees to good use and have embraced a strong work ethic just like him.”
— Nancy Wells, Harry’s daughter
Harry was born on July 12, 1926 and passed at the age of 81, May 2008.
Continue reading on the life of Harry Hall.
Harry and his brother, Buddy, were raised primarily by a single mother; their parents divorced when the boys were young. Harry’s mother, Kate, worked in the supply room at Grady Memorial Hospital for many years. At one point, the family had to rely on public assistance to cover the cost of basic needs. Harry graduated from West Fulton High School on Bankhead Highway in Atlanta in 1943. After high school, Harry entered the Air Force where he served the country during the last years of WWII as an Aerial Engineer. While stationed in Guam, on January 10, 1946, Harry was baptized by a United States Army Chaplain, William R. Lawrence. On the day of his baptism, he was given the “Outline of Old Testament History” written by Chaplain Lawrence. Harry kept these 6-page documents all of these years which signifies their importance to him.

On February 16, 1951, Harry married Evelyn Mae Landers. Evelyn, his devoted wife of forty-eight years, and most wonderful mother of 4 children, preceded him in death in February 1999 after a three-year struggle with multiple myeloma.

In August 2003, Harry married Yvonne Gemmill, a widow from Edgerton, Minnesota, and they remained happily married until the day of his death.

This big family picture was taken in November 1998 and includes eight of his ten grandchildren.

Harry’s career began as a Georgia Tech Research Station analyzing ores of beryllium in connection with the investigation into the use of nuclear energy for the propulsion of aircraft. He later was employed by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration as an analytical chemist, General Services Administration where he analyzed many of the products purchased by the U. S. Government and then spent 32 years with Coca-Cola as a trade goods analysis and formula Principal Investigator He retired from Coke in 1990.

After discharge from the Air Force, he enrolled at the Georgia Institute of Technology in January 1947, graduating in December 1950 with a Bachelors Degree in Chemistry.

Harry attended West Fulton High School graduating in 1943 and enlisting in the Air Force shortly thereafter. He took basic training at Keesler Field, Mississippi followed by B-29 mechanics school at Boeing Field in Seattle. He served in the Pacific Theater in the 20th Air Force as an aerial engineer. He was stationed on Guam flying frequently to Tinian and Saipan in the Mariana Islands. Other flights were to Iwo Jima and Japan. He was responsible for the mechanical functioning of the aircraft. He supervised the ground crew and flew with the C-46 and B-17 aircrafts. He was baptized in January 1946 in the Pacific Ocean at Tumon Bay, Guam.

After retirement, he lived in Roswell with Evelyn. He was an active member of the Roswell United Methodist Church participating in Sunday School, Traveler’s Club, the Senior Adult Council, and the PrimeTime Singers. Harry’s hobbies and interests included genealogy, square dancing, hiking, walking, and bicycling. He completed two bicycle rides across Georgia and biked on trails in South Dakota, Virginia, Florida, and the Caribbean.

He was big on doing-it-yourself. If he didn’t know how to do something, he’d learn. When he was young, Harry added a basement to the family house by digging out a space, making walls and a floor out of concrete using forms he made himself. Later in life, he even built a small garden house on the property.

Harry was interested in living healthy, and he was totally committed to doing the right things. He did, however, love of sweets. He loved to have a chocolate bar each afternoon with a Caffeine Diet Coke.

Harry walked at Roswell Area Park almost every day! He loved riding his bicycle and exploring the outdoors!
